2026 Yeongju Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival: A Healing Spring Experience

2026 Yeongju Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival: A Healing Spring Experience

June 15, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Entertainment

The 2026 Yeongju Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival will take place from May 23 to 24 at the Sobaeksan area and Punggi Ginseng Culture Pop-up Park, according to city officials. The event transitions from a traditional hiking-centric gathering to a “stay-over healing tourism festival” designed to attract families and visitors who do not hike.

Yeongju officials established a “festival you can enjoy without hiking boots” concept. This strategy aims to expand the participant base by linking the Sobaeksan mountain sites with the Punggi event grounds through interactive content.

What activities are available at the 2026 Yeongju Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival?

Visitors at Sobaeksan can participate in the Jukryeong old road walking program, which includes storytelling elements like tavern experiences and reenactments of scholars and peddlers. The city is also introducing “Sobaeksan Azalea Road Trekking” with three distinct courses: a traverse exploration type, a landscape walk type, and a healing forest path type.

At the Punggi Ginseng Culture Pop-up Park, the “KidZania in Azalea Festival” offers children career experiences as CSI investigators, veterinarians, bankers, dentists, architects, and magic school students. A “Manmul Art Truck” will also operate, allowing guests to exchange their drawings for local agricultural products.

Did You Know? The festival features a unique “Manmul Art Truck” where visitors can trade their own artwork for local specialty produce.

Additional activities include azalea-themed fashion tattoos, bead keyring making, and “Life Four Cuts” photo zones.

What performances are scheduled for the festival?

The May 23 schedule includes a bubble show, a balloon art show, busking by Song Mi-hae and Oh Ye-rin, and the Yeongju Sobaek Azalea Choir. On May 24, the lineup shifts to a magic show, cotton candy performances, busking by Park Bong-soon and Seo Ye-an, youth dance performances, and a show by Dendong-eomi Hwajeonga.

The event grounds will also host a flea market and a local coexistence market featuring craft products and food booths utilizing regional specialties.

Expert Insight: Samantha Carter notes that shifting from a nature-only attraction to a “stay-over” model is a strategic move to increase local economic impact. By diversifying activities to include children’s career simulations and urban-style entertainment, the city is likely attempting to reduce the seasonal volatility of mountain tourism.

Why is Yeongju changing the festival’s focus?

Acting Mayor Eom Tae-hyun stated that the city prepared diverse programs to ensure both citizens and tourists can enjoy the period when Sobaeksan azaleas are at their peak. The city aims to strengthen the “Yeongju = Sobaeksan” brand image by integrating performance, experience, and rest.

Why is Yeongju changing the festival's focus?

This shift may lead to a higher volume of family-unit tourists. Consequently, the city could see an increase in overnight stays if the “stay-over” infrastructure successfully supports the new event format.
