2,5 Meter Sneeuw: Skigebied Zeker van Seizoen
Baqueira Beret, a popular winter sports destination, is facing a unique challenge: too much snow. Over 250 centimeters of snowfall has blanketed the area around Beret in the last month, delighting skiers and snowboarders but creating significant hurdles for organizers preparing to host the Europa Cup Slalom on February 3rd and 4th.
A Race Against Nature
The Europa Cup Slalom will take place on the Stadium Fernández Ochoa piste, which must meet strict standards set by the FIS (International Ski Federation). While recreational skiers enjoy the benefits of powdery snow, a slalom course demands a firm, compact, and consistent surface. This discrepancy is at the heart of the current challenge.
According to Quique Quintero, responsible for piste preparation, the course has been undergoing intensive treatment since the beginning of the winter season. The key is a precise balance of spraying water and mechanical preparation to create the necessary hard layer for high-level slalom competition.
The Intensive Preparation Process
Over the past few weeks, the piste has been artificially sprayed on January 16th, 22nd, and 28th to maintain the required ice layer. Between sprayings, fresh snow is removed daily, followed by milling and compaction using specialized machinery. The goal is to prevent new snowfall from compromising the existing hard base, taking advantage of cold nights to aid in the hardening process.
This isn’t a routine task. More than 25 specialists – including piste workers, snowmakers, and machinists – are involved in the process daily, often working in challenging winter conditions. Local ski clubs are also providing support in the final days leading up to the competition, assisting with organizational preparations.
Looking Ahead
Despite the exceptional snow conditions, organizers at Baqueira Beret state that preparations are on schedule. The Europa Cup races are not only an important event within the Europa Cup circuit but also serve as a crucial test run in anticipation of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest challenge facing the Europa Cup Slalom?
The biggest challenge is the large amount of snow – over 180 centimeters in the last two weeks – which creates soft layers that make it difficult to maintain a stable ice base for the slalom course.
How are organizers preparing the piste?
Organizers are using a combination of artificial snowmaking, snow removal, milling, and compaction to create a hard, consistent surface. They are also taking advantage of cold nights to allow the snow to harden.
How many people are involved in preparing the piste?
More than 25 specialists, including piste workers, snowmakers, and machinists, are working daily to prepare the Stadium Fernández Ochoa piste.
If the weather cooperates, the competition in Beret is expected to proceed as planned in early February.
