8 Riders Rescued After Galveston Roller Coaster Malfunction
Eight riders were left dangling near the top of a towering roller coaster for more than three hours before firefighters rescued them one by one at a Texas amusement park.
The Galveston Police Department reported that authorities responded around 5:35 p.m. Thursday to Pleasure Pier in Galveston, where the Iron Shark roller coaster malfunctioned.
Rescue Operation and Passenger Safety
Officials stated that eight people were aboard the ride when it became stuck during its initial ascent. The malfunction left the passengers stranded high above the pier near the top of the ride’s 100-foot vertical lift hill.
The Galveston Fire Department utilized a ladder truck to remove the stranded passengers. Using safety harnesses, first responders rescued the individuals one by one, a process that took roughly three and a half hours to complete.
Impact on Student Field Trip
The Houston Independent School District confirmed that some of the stranded riders were students on a field trip. The group was organized by Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and Energized for STEM Academy High School, both of which are HISD in-district charter schools.
“We are grateful that all students, staff, and chaperones are safe,” the district said in a statement. The district added that school administration is in direct contact with the families of the students involved and expressed thanks for the efforts of park personnel and first responders.
Official Response and Next Steps
Pleasure Pier COO Terry Turney stated that the ride experienced a malfunction during its initial ascent. Turney noted that the ride stopped immediately as designed to keep everyone safe.

“Our focus immediately shifted to the safety of our guests,” Turney said, explaining that the Fire Department was contacted to ensure all guests were safely removed.
While officials have not yet identified the specific cause of the malfunction, the ride is expected to undergo a thorough inspection. This process is likely to occur before the attraction returns to service.
