A Colorful New Sculpture Just Debuted in Union Square
Union Square Partnership, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and design collective Scale Rule have unveiled “Bead Maze,” an interactive public sculpture at University Plaza. Inspired by childhood bead maze toys, the 26.5-foot by 13-foot structure allows pedestrians to slide giant plywood beads along steel tracks.
What are the design features of the Bead Maze?
Seven seniors from FIT’s Fine Arts program conceptualized the installation. The sculpture features looping, bending steel pipes and giant plywood beads that visitors can move manually through the structure.

A signature acrylic bead is positioned 12 feet in the air. This element serves as a beacon and a reminder of classic toys often found in pediatrician waiting rooms.
Who collaborated to build the sculpture?
Brooklyn’s A05 Studio handled the fabrication of the piece. Engineering was provided by the architectural firms Grimshaw and sbp to ensure the structure remained sturdy.
Philanthropist Bob Fisch and the NYC DOT Art Program supported the project. Julie Stein, Executive Director of Union Square Partnership, stated the artwork is “visually compelling, deeply collaborative, and rooted in the life of the neighborhood.”
What is the significance of the installation?
The project marks a major milestone for FIT’s School of Art and Design. It allows students to showcase their talents to a vast urban audience.
The installation may encourage more interactive art collaborations in public spaces. It is likely to attract commuters and students seeking a brief escape from adulthood through tactile play.
