Adobe Animate is shutting down next month
Adobe has announced it will cease sales of Adobe Animate, a vector graphics and animation software, on March 1st. The decision, communicated via a FAQ on Adobe’s website, cites the availability of newer platforms that the company believes “better serve the needs of the users.”
A Long History of Evolution
From FutureSplash to Animate
The software’s origins date back to 1996 with FutureWave Software’s FutureSplash Animator. Macromedia acquired the application later that year, rebranding it as Flash. Adobe then acquired Macromedia in 2005, renaming the software Adobe Flash Professional before ultimately settling on the name Adobe Animate in 2015, coinciding with the decline in web support for Flash technology.
Implications for Users
Current users will be able to access and download files from Animate until March 1st, 2027, with enterprise customers having until March 1st, 2029. Adobe will continue to provide support for the application during this transition period. However, access to these files will be cut off after these dates.
While Adobe suggests Creative Cloud Pro users can utilize other applications like Adobe After Effects and Adobe Express to replicate some Animate functionality, the announcement has sparked concern among users. Creators of the animated series Chikn Nuggit stated on X (formerly Twitter) that they still rely on Animate for production, and expressed fears the decision “would not only harm countless jobs in the industry but render so much past creations as lost media.”
Industry-Wide Impact
David Firth, creator of Salad Fingers, also indicated continued reliance on the software. Megacharlie, a technical artist for Jackbox Games, added that Animate is widely used across various sectors, including television, film, game development studios, and by numerous independent creators.
The future is uncertain for those who depend on Animate. Alternative software solutions will emerge to fill the gap, or that users will adapt existing tools to meet their needs. It’s also possible that a segment of the animation community will struggle to transition, potentially impacting ongoing projects and the preservation of older animations.
