Africa’s largest oil refinery hits a global milestone, now operating as originally designed
The Dangote Refinery has achieved a significant operational milestone, becoming the first single-train refinery of its size globally to reach full capacity following the successful restoration and optimization of its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and Motor Spirit (MS) production block. This achievement signals a potential turning point for Nigeria’s energy sector and its ambitions for self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products.
Operational Success and Validation
To validate the refinery’s operational stability, efficiency, and adherence to international standards, a 72-hour intensive performance test run is scheduled in collaboration with its licensor, UOP. This rigorous testing phase follows a planned maintenance exercise on the CDU and MS Block, demonstrating a commitment to best practices and quality control.
According to David Bird, Managing Director of the refinery, the teams involved have demonstrated “exceptional precision and expertise” in stabilizing both the CDU and MS Block. He emphasized that this milestone “underscores the strength, reliability, and engineering quality that define our operations.”
Future Expansion and Production Goals
The refinery’s ambitions extend beyond simply reaching full capacity. Last July, plans were revealed to expand production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 700,000 bpd by the end of 2025. Further expansion was announced in August, with production capacity increasing to approximately 610,000 bpd. More recently, Aliko Dangote, Chief of the Dangote Group, indicated intentions to increase capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.
The CDU, described as a refinery’s main processing unit, separates crude oil into different fractions. The MS Block, consisting of the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerization unit, and reformer unit, upgrades intermediate streams into high-octane gasoline blends. The refinery’s remaining processing units are slated to begin Phase 2 performance test runs in the coming week, signaling the completion of technical validation across the entire complex.
Frequently Asked Questions
