Asteroid 2024 YR4: Potential Moon Impact & Meteor Shower in 2032

Asteroid 2024 YR4: Potential Moon Impact & Meteor Shower in 2032

February 5, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

An asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, presents a potential impact risk to the Moon in 2032, and could potentially eject up to 100 kilograms of lunar rock toward Earth. This event could create a “super meteor storm,” an extreme rain of meteors occurring between two and 100 days after a potential impact.

Asteroid 2024 YR4: A Potential Lunar Impact

NASA currently estimates the probability of 2024 YR4 striking the Moon at 4.3 percent. The asteroid, approximately 60 meters in diameter – roughly the size of a 15-story building – was first detected on December 27, 2024.

Did You Know? In February 2025, astronomers calculated that asteroid 2024 YR4 had the highest probability in recorded history of impacting Earth among asteroids of similar or larger size.

Initial calculations in February 2025 indicated a 3.1 percent probability of the asteroid impacting Earth, a figure higher than the chance of a lunar collision. However, more detailed trajectory analysis subsequently eliminated the possibility of an Earth impact during its close approach on December 22, 2032.

Scientific Investigation and Potential Effects

The potential for a lunar impact has garnered attention from researchers like Yifei Jiao, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Scientists view this as a rare natural experiment, prompting them to evaluate potential outcomes.

Researchers created computer models of the solar system, including the asteroid, planets, the Moon, and the Sun, to simulate the asteroid’s trajectory. By adjusting the asteroid’s path, they generated 10,000 simulations to identify the most likely impact areas on the Moon.

Simulations suggest a potential impact along a corridor approximately 3,000 kilometers long, located just north of the Tycho crater on the Moon. From the perspective of observers in the Northern Hemisphere, this impact zone would be located on the lower portion of the Moon.

Expert Insight: The detailed modeling of this potential impact event demonstrates a proactive approach to understanding and preparing for near-Earth object encounters, even those primarily affecting other celestial bodies.

A collision would generate a flash of light comparable in brightness to Venus in the night sky, with a magnitude between -2.5 and -3. The flash could last between 200 and 300 seconds, but would likely be clearly visible for at least 10 seconds when sufficiently bright against the background.

If the impact occurs as predicted, the event is expected to happen at 10:19 EST (22:19 WIB), making it visible in regions where the Moon is above the horizon, including East Asia, Oceania, Hawaii, and western North America.
