Australian sheds inform compact mobile cabin by Hayley Pryor
A unique, road-legal cabin dubbed “The Oculus” has been designed by architect Hayley Pryor in collaboration with builder Chris King in Byron Bay, Australia. The 21-square-metre structure is intended as a flexible living space, offering possibilities ranging from a standalone home to a garden studio.
A Modern Take on the Australian Shed
Pryor intentionally designed The Oculus to resemble a typical Australian shed, utilizing a timber exterior and a corrugated metal roof. However, this is no ordinary shed. A defining feature is the large central skylight – the “Oculus” itself – at the roof’s apex. This skylight serves a dual purpose, flooding the interior with natural light and facilitating a stack ventilation effect when opened.
According to Pryor, the design “draws on the familiarity of the Australian shed and reinterpreting it through form, light and ventilation, [resulting] in a flexible retreat for minimal living.” The cabin’s design also prioritizes passive climate control, incorporating features like cross and stack ventilation, operable windows, and removable eaves to manage heat naturally.
Interior Efficiency and Design
The interior of The Oculus is designed for maximum efficiency. Built-in furniture defines distinct zones for sleeping, living, dining, and the kitchen, while also providing integrated storage. A sliding door leads to a bathroom that also offers exterior access for convenience.
Large plywood shutters enhance natural ventilation, and a sliding glass door at the cabin’s front opens onto a terrace sheltered by the roof’s eaves. These eaves are designed to retract into custom-welded brackets during transport, ensuring the cabin’s road-legal status is maintained.
The Future of Mobile Living
The Oculus represents the first made-to-order model offered by Retreat House, a mobile home company founded by Chris King. Similar mobile cabin designs, such as the Cocoon Freelancer by Maruán Attia and a hemp-clad micro home, demonstrate a broader interest in alternative and portable housing solutions.
