Authorities confirm body of French diver missing in Antarctica has been found
The body of a French diver, Gérald Malaussena, has been recovered following an extensive multinational search in Antarctica. Malaussena went missing on January 13th while working with a colleague to inspect scientific equipment beneath the ice near Dumont d’Urville Station in Adélie Land.
The Search Operation
Immediately after Malaussena’s disappearance, a search was initiated. Teams systematically drilled into the ice, utilizing cameras to examine the water column and sonar technology to detect metallic objects – potentially diving equipment – up to several meters below the surface.
The initial search efforts were augmented by the arrival of four members of the US Coast Guard from McMurdo Station on January 15th, deploying a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV). Despite extensive dives, the ROV search proved unsuccessful, and the US team departed on January 17th.
Expanding the Search
Further searches continued, incorporating infrared cameras. Simultaneously, the French icebreaker L’Astrolabe set sail from Hobart on January 18th, carrying three additional French divers from Reunion Island to bolster the search capabilities. A second US Coast Guard member arrived at McMurdo Station on January 21st with another ROV equipped with sonar, offering a longer range – 300 meters – for exploration.
It was with this second ROV that Malaussena’s body was ultimately located. The French Polar Institute confirmed that this was Malaussena’s fifth consecutive summer working in Antarctica.
Remembering Gérald Malaussena
The institute described Malaussena as a highly skilled professional, known for his wit and intelligence. He was remembered as a passionate diver and musician, well-liked by his colleagues. The director of the institute, David Renault, stated, “You will forever be with us, part of this polar family.” A psychologist is traveling with the L’Astrolabe to provide support to staff at the station.
