Badminton: Jonassen believes Jin Wei has rediscovered her rhythm, will be good for Uber Cup
PETALING JAYA – A strategic move by national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen could bolster Malaysia’s chances in the upcoming Uber Cup, scheduled for Horsens in April. Jonassen has extended an invitation to independent women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei to join the national squad.
Reinforcing the Squad
This isn’t the first time Jonassen has looked to Jin Wei for support. She was previously included in the team for the Uber Cup editions in Bangkok in 2022 and Chengdu in 2024, as well as the Sudirman Cup in Xiamen last year. However, Jonassen believes Jin Wei’s recent form justifies another call-up.
Recent Performance Key
Jin Wei’s resurgence is highlighted by her runner-up finish at the Thailand Masters in Bangkok three weeks ago. During the tournament, she notably defeated two current national players: K. Letshanaa in the quarter-finals and Wong Ling Ching in the semi-finals. She was later forced to retire in the final against India’s Devika Sihag.
“I think her showing a restored level and the way she fought in Thailand have proven to us that she is back at a high level,” Jonassen stated. He also emphasized that her inclusion isn’t entirely new, as she was part of the Sudirman Cup team last year.
Strategic Goals for the Uber Cup
Jonassen’s decision is directly tied to his ambition to improve Malaysia’s performance in the Uber Cup. He aims to move beyond simply participating in the group stage and instead field a team capable of mounting a strong challenge. He envisions a balanced team with three women’s singles players competing at a similar level.
“Maybe not against the very top teams, but against everybody else. Suddenly our line up is looking strong and, as I said, in those 10 days we are there to perform,” Jonassen added.
Pending Decisions and Additional Support
Currently, both Jin Wei and men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia are considering whether to accept their respective invitations and have requested an additional week to decide. Meanwhile, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, Goh Sze Fei, and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have already committed to supporting the national squad in the Thomas Cup.
