Brooklyn Museum Brings Back Free First Saturdays in NYC: Details

Brooklyn Museum Brings Back Free First Saturdays in NYC: Details

January 27, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Brooklyn Museum’s popular First Saturdays event series is returning after a winter break, beginning February 7. The event, a long-standing tradition since 1998, will kick off the 2026 season with a celebration coinciding with Black History Month.

A Community Tradition Returns

First Saturdays offers free, after-hours access to the museum, featuring a diverse range of programming. Attendees can expect live music, performances by Brooklyn artists, curator-led tours, film screenings, art-making activities, pop-up talks, and a local marketplace.

The “Imitate No One” Theme

The February event, titled “Imitate No One,” pays tribute to poet Jayne Cortez and her influence on contemporary artists. The evening will include a performance by Cortez’s band, The Firespitters, and readings from poets inspired by her work.

Did You Know? First Saturdays has been a staple of Brooklyn’s cultural scene since 1998.

Inspired by Seydou Keïta

Programming will also draw inspiration from the exhibition “Seydou Keïta: A Tactile Lens,” which showcases the work of the influential Malian photographer. Art historian Catherine E. McKinley will lead a tour focusing on Keïta’s portraits and themes of modernity and African independence. A hands-on art station will allow guests to experiment with Polaroid photography, mirroring Keïta’s studio practice.

A Diverse Lineup of Performances

Music will be central to the event, with DJs Auntie Spice and Monday Blue performing in the Beaux-Arts Court. The Brooklyn Ecumenical Choir, Nailah Hunter, and Timmy Regisford will also perform in the lobby. Cue the Record will host a listening session of Fela Kuti’s 1973 album Gentleman, and magician Nicole Cardoza will present a show highlighting the contributions of Black and women magicians.

Expert Insight: The continued success of First Saturdays demonstrates a growing demand for accessible cultural experiences that move beyond traditional museum settings. By offering free admission and a dynamic program, the Brooklyn Museum is actively fostering community engagement and broadening its reach.
