Bujama Beach: High Levels of E. coli & Fecal Coliforms Raise Health Concerns

Bujama Beach: High Levels of E. coli & Fecal Coliforms Raise Health Concerns

February 17, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Alarming levels of fecal coliforms, including the dangerous bacteria Escherichia coli, have been detected in the waters off the coast of Peru. The contamination extends beyond Playa Bujama, with nearby beaches also showing indicators of pollution stemming from sewage runoff.

Details of the Contamination

Eileen Quezada, a specialist with Proyecto Tadeo – an organization dedicated to addressing harmful algal blooms in Peru – detailed the current situation at Playa Bujama, north of Mala in Cañete. She highlighted the ongoing pollution caused by sewage discharge entering the sea. Quezada shared a personal connection to the issue, recounting how her dog became ill after swimming in the contaminated waters in February 2023 and ultimately died from the resulting intoxication.

Returning to Bujama years later, Quezada observed the sea had turned a strange, almost fluorescent green. Local fishermen reported never having seen the water this color, suggesting the nearby sewage discharge was the cause. Upon investigation, Quezada found pipes directly releasing sewage into the ocean, creating a visible lagoon of waste.

Water samples collected on January 11th revealed the presence of fecal coliforms and, alarmingly, high levels of Escherichia coli. Quezada also noted the sand itself is green, suggesting widespread contamination.

Did You Know? Eileen Quezada’s concern over water contamination began after her golden retriever became ill and died after swimming in the sea at Playa Bujama in February 2023.

Is the Beach Considered “Healthy”?

According to the Ministry of Health’s (Minsa) Verano Saludable platform, updated in early January 2026, 41 beaches in Lima Metropolitana were deemed safe and healthy. However, the platform classifies Playa Bujama Norte as “unhealthy,” not due to microbiological water quality or environmental cleanliness, but due to the condition of its sanitary facilities.

Plataforma Verano Saludable no advierte presencia de contaminación microbiológica en Bujama.

The Verano Saludable platform does not warn of microbiological contamination in Bujama.

Quezada disputes this assessment, stating the platform’s classification is inconsistent with the visible sewage discharge and confirmed presence of fecal coliforms.

Expert Insight: The presence of E. Coli and fecal coliforms is a clear indicator of sewage contamination and poses a health risk, potentially causing gastrointestinal and skin infections. Effective waste management and consistent monitoring are crucial to address this issue.

Expert Opinion

Luis Santillán, an environmental engineering researcher at USI, explained that common beach problems include accumulated solid waste and contamination from nearby sewage pipes. Ronald Rodríguez, director of the Environmental Engineering program at the Autonomous University of Peru, stated that the presence of E. Coli or coliforms indicates contamination from untreated sewage.

Both experts emphasize the need for efficient waste management, consistent monitoring and enforcement of regulations. Rodríguez added that addressing the source of contamination – treating sewage before it reaches the sea and closing illegal discharge pipes – is the most effective solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Escherichia coli?

Escherichia coli is a type of bacteria found in the intestines of humans and animals. Its presence in water indicates fecal contamination and can cause illness.

What are fecal coliforms?

Fecal coliforms are bacteria commonly found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. They are used as indicators of fecal contamination in water sources.

What is being done to address the contamination?

The article does not detail specific actions being taken to address the contamination, but experts suggest efficient waste management, consistent monitoring, and enforcement of regulations are necessary.

Given the concerning levels of contamination, what steps will be taken to protect public health and restore the ecological integrity of these coastal areas?
