For years, the race in artificial intelligence has centered on processing power – faster chips, more GPUs. But a critical shift is underway. The Rising Cost of AI’s Appetite

Data centres are already massive energy consumers. Projections indicate electricity consumption from these facilities will nearly triple by 2035, according to a December 2025 report from BloombergNEF. Goldman Sachs Research estimates power demand could surge 175% by 2030 from 2023 levels – equivalent to adding another top-10 power-consuming country. This escalating demand isn’t simply a generation problem; a significant portion of the energy is lost in the conversion process within the data center.

Currently, stepping down high-voltage power to levels usable by GPUs wastes approximately 15% to 20% of energy. This inefficiency translates to substantial costs – and a growing environmental impact.

C2i Semiconductors: A New Approach to Power Delivery

Enter C2i Semiconductors, an Indian startup tackling this challenge head-on. Founded in 2024 by a team of former Texas Instruments power executives, C2i is reimagining power delivery as a unified, “grid-to-GPU” system. Instead of treating power conversion as a series of discrete steps, C2i aims to integrate silicon, packaging, and system architecture for a more streamlined and efficient process.

C2i estimates its integrated approach can reduce end-to-end energy losses by around 10%, saving roughly 100 kilowatts per megawatt consumed. This translates to lower cooling costs, improved GPU utilization, and a better bottom line.

India’s Semiconductor Rise and the Role of Investment

The $15 million Series A funding round, led by Peak XV Partners with participation from Yali Deeptech and TDK Ventures, brings C2i’s total funding to $19 million. This investment isn’t just about a promising technology; it’s a signal of India’s growing prominence in semiconductor design. Peak XV Partners’ Rajan Anandan likened the current state of India’s semiconductor industry to the e-commerce boom of 2008 – just getting started.

Government incentives and a deep pool of engineering talent are fueling this growth, making it increasingly viable for startups like C2i to develop globally competitive semiconductor products from India.

The Road Ahead: Validation and Scalability

C2i’s first silicon designs are expected to be ready for validation between April and June. The startup is already engaging with data center operators and hyperscalers to test and refine its solutions. The next six months will be critical, as Peak XV Partners emphasizes the importance of execution – proving the technology, navigating the market, and building a strong team.

Power delivery is a well-established field dominated by large companies. C2i’s success hinges on its ability to disrupt this landscape with its integrated, system-level approach.
