Cabo Real Surf Club: Mexico’s First Luxury Wave Pool Community Takes Shape

Cabo Real Surf Club: Mexico’s First Luxury Wave Pool Community Takes Shape

February 21, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

The Cabo Real Surf Club, a groundbreaking project in Mexico, is moving from concept to reality. Construction is now fully underway on what’s being touted as the next evolution of the private club model, centered around a four-acre surf basin alongside an existing championship golf course.

A Legacy Taking Shape

The land for this ambitious development has been in the Sánchez Navarro family since the late 1980s. Eduardo Sánchez Navarro envisioned the potential of the coastline during a honeymoon visit. The family subsequently acquired a substantial portion of the corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, opening a golf course in 1994 and Casa del Mar, but leaving a prime ocean-view plateau untouched – until now.

Did You Know? The Cabo Real golf course first opened in 1994, establishing the foundation for the larger development.

Fabian Bouffier, a partner at Cabo Real and a cousin of the landowners, emphasized the family’s deep connection to the land. His familiarity with the property has been instrumental in merging the family’s legacy with the forward-thinking surf concept.

Riding the Wave of Changing Trends

The surf basin concept gained traction in early 2022 when Meriwether Companies reconnected with Grupo Questro following a surge in real estate interest after the pandemic. Meriwether, familiar with the Cabo market, recognized the unique opportunity presented by the existing golf course and the relatively flat, ocean-view site. Rather than competing with golf, the developers chose to complement it.

The project’s timing reflects a broader shift in recreational preferences. While some private golf communities experienced declining interest before 2020, both golf and surfing saw a surge in participation post-COVID. The development team views surfing as a way to attract a new generation of members.

Expert Insight:

Expert Insight: The integration of surfing into a traditionally golf-focused private club represents a strategic diversification, potentially broadening the appeal to a wider demographic and enhancing the overall member experience.

Graham Culp, co-founder of Meriwether Companies, explained that they were seeking a more “experiential, more communal” offering, and that “surf brings in a different buyer.” The Cabo Real Surf Club is designed as a private, member-driven environment, offering customized waves for individual surfers or groups.

Addressing the Cabo Conundrum

The decision to build a wave pool in a region known for its ocean surf is rooted in reliability. While waves can be found within an hour of Cabo Real, their consistency and suitability for all skill levels are not guaranteed. A wave basin provides predictable conditions, offering a safe learning environment for beginners, controlled practise for intermediate surfers, and refinement opportunities for advanced riders.

The basin also addresses seasonality. While Cabo’s peak season runs through early summer, golf can be challenging during the hotter months. Surfing, however, remains appealing with controlled waves and warm water, potentially extending the resort’s appeal year-round.

Navigating Uncharted Territory

Building a private wave basin community presents unique challenges. There is no established playbook for operating such a facility, requiring innovation in areas like reservation systems, skill-based sessions, and energy management. Engineering considerations are also critical, given Cabo’s climate and the need to maximize wave quality while minimizing downtime.

Despite these challenges, demand for memberships has remained strong, even during the typically slower summer months. Buyers are engaged and interested, and sales have remained steady.

Looking Ahead

The current target is to begin commissioning and testing waves by late summer 2026, with full operational readiness expected by the end of the year. Construction of surf casitas is planned to begin in early 2026, coinciding with the basin’s launch. Lot owners are already preparing to build custom homes as infrastructure is put in place.

The project’s scale is significant, with a massive basin footprint and extensive excavation already underway. If successful, Cabo Real Surf Club could redefine the modern private club experience, seamlessly integrating championship golf with world-class wave riding.
