Can AI Prevent Your Next Herpes Breakout? Israeli Researchers Have the Answer

Can AI Prevent Your Next Herpes Breakout? Israeli Researchers Have the Answer

February 8, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming an indispensable tool in the fight against disease, moving beyond a promising newcomer to a foundational element of modern medicine. Its applications are expanding across research, clinical practise and healthcare systems, offering insights and solutions previously unimaginable.

Unlocking the Secrets of Herpesviruses

A recent study, published in December in the journal Nature Communications, demonstrates the power of AI in understanding a widespread family of viruses known as herpesviruses (Herpesviridae). These viruses are responsible for common ailments like cold sores and chickenpox, but also include strains linked to certain cancers.

Did You Know? Between 90 and 95 percent of adults have been infected with at least one herpesvirus during their lifetime.

How AI is Making a Difference

Researchers at the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine at Bar-Ilan University in the Galilee have developed an AI tool called ENHAvir. This model functions similarly to search engines, but instead of processing language, it identifies genetic control zones within the viral DNA – the specific sequences that activate genes in herpesviruses.

These “enhancers” are crucial in the transition of herpesviruses from a dormant to an active state, triggering illness. By pinpointing these control zones, scientists hope to develop interventions that can either suppress or activate them, potentially preventing or mitigating disease.

Expert Insight: The ability of AI to identify these genetic control zones, even with limited initial data, highlights its potential to accelerate research and uncover previously hidden mechanisms of disease. This could lead to more targeted and effective therapies.

Professor Meir Shamay and his team focused their research on two herpesviruses linked to cancer: Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and Epstein-Barr (EBV). The goal is to understand how these viruses cause cancer and to develop tools for early detection and treatment.

Beyond Herpes: A Broader Impact

The researchers found that ENHAvir could predict enhancers in various types of herpesviruses – including Epstein-Barr virus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), HSV-1 (oral herpes), and HSV-2 (genital herpes) – based on analysis of only six initial sequences. This suggests the AI’s findings could have implications for treating a wide range of herpesvirus-related illnesses.

Professor Shamay notes that studying viral enhancers can also provide insights into human genetics. Viruses, over millions of years, have evolved to utilize essential human genetic sequences for their survival, making them valuable models for understanding fundamental biological processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are herpesviruses?

Herpesviruses are a widespread family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from common ailments like cold sores and chickenpox to more serious conditions, including certain types of cancer.

What is ENHAvir?

ENHAvir is an artificial intelligence tool developed by researchers at Bar-Ilan University that identifies genetic control zones – regions of DNA that activate genes – within herpesviruses.

What is the potential impact of this research?

This research could lead to the development of new treatments and preventative measures for diseases caused by herpesviruses by allowing scientists to intervene in the viral activation process.
