Civic Solutions: Two-Month Waits, Too Few Doctors—the Desert Healthcare District Looks at Workforce Fixes as Part of Its Strategic-Planning Process

Civic Solutions: Two-Month Waits, Too Few Doctors—the Desert Healthcare District Looks at Workforce Fixes as Part of Its Strategic-Planning Process

February 22, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

For Susie Dauto, a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and day-care owner in Desert Hot Springs, consistent access to healthcare requires leaving her community. This experience is shared by many residents who find themselves travelling to neighboring cities like Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Loma Linda to meet their health needs.

A Community Voices Its Concerns

Dauto was among approximately two dozen Desert Hot Springs residents who participated in a community meeting hosted by the Desert Healthcare District and Foundation in mid-February. This meeting was one of seven “community listening sessions” designed to inform the district’s next strategic plan. Attendees represented a range of residency durations, from one year to 31 years, and included volunteers from the housing advocacy organization Lift to Rise, as well as DHCD staff and Riverside County District 4 Supervisor V. Manuel Perez.

A Shortage of Providers

A central theme emerged from the public comments: a lack of sufficient healthcare providers within Desert Hot Springs. This concern is supported by data identifying many parts of the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas as federally designated Medically Underserved Areas, meaning there aren’t enough healthcare professionals to serve the population.

Did You Know? The Desert Healthcare District has invested over $100 million into community health initiatives since 1998.

While the Desert Hot Springs Community Health Center, operated by DAP Health, exists within the city, its weekday hours of 8 a.m. To 5 p.m. Can pose challenges for working parents. DHCD Zone 2 Board Member Carole Rogers reported that even accessing care at the community health center can be difficult, with a two-month wait time for a primary care appointment.

Residents shared stories of seeking care outside of Desert Hot Springs due to these access issues. One resident reported travelling to Mexicali for quicker access to healthcare, while another traveled back to the Dominican Republic. The difficulty in accessing timely care is particularly concerning for those with serious health conditions, such as Dauto’s grandson who requires travel to Loma Linda for cancer treatment.

Emergency Preparedness and Workforce Challenges

Concerns extend beyond routine care. Susan Cabeje, a longtime resident, highlighted the potential for disruption in the event of a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or flooding that could close major roadways like Gene Autry. She emphasized the need for a local facility to provide emergency care should access to regional hospitals be cut off.

The Desert Healthcare District recognizes workforce development as a key area of focus in its upcoming strategic plan, alongside awareness and access, and data-driven decision-making. Potential solutions discussed include supporting a pediatric residency programme, offering scholarships for healthcare training, and providing financial assistance for relocation to attract professionals to the area.

Expert Insight: Addressing healthcare access requires not only attracting professionals to the field, but also ensuring they can afford to live and work within the community, considering factors like housing and childcare costs.

Jana Trew, who operates social-service programs in Desert Hot Springs and Riverside, pointed out that retaining healthcare professionals is as important as recruiting them. She emphasized that affordability – encompassing housing and basic necessities – is crucial for ensuring individuals can remain committed to their roles.
