El Moro—Mexico City’s most famous churro shop—has arrived in Echo Park

El Moro—Mexico City’s most famous churro shop—has arrived in Echo Park

February 6, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Los Angeles residents now have a taste of Mexico City closer to home. El Moro, Mexico City’s most popular churrería, has opened its first location in the Echo Park neighborhood, serving churros alongside consuelo ice cream sandwiches, hot chocolate, milkshakes, coffee, and tortas.

A Legacy of Churros

The Echo Park location, which opened on January 29, represents the first U.S. Outpost for El Moro, following a previous location in Costa Mesa’s Mercado González. The family business began in 1935 when Francisco Iriarte, having emigrated from Spain, started selling churros from a cart in Mexico City. Today, El Moro operates 18 locations in Mexico and two in Southern California.

Location and Atmosphere

Situated on Sunset Boulevard and Laveta Terrace, El Moro occupies the space formerly held by Patra Burgers. Its blue-and-white branding echoes the colors of nearby Dodger Stadium. The shop is conveniently located across from Monty’s Good Burger and down the block from Donna’s and Lowboy.

Did You Know? El Moro has been serving churros in Mexico City since 1935, originating from a cart operated by Francisco Iriarte.

A Churro Connoisseur’s Take

The menu features churros available individually, in sets of four or a dozen, or as bite-sized “moritos.” A variety of dipping sauces are offered, including cajeta, guava, condensed milk, and chocolate hazelnut, with seasonal flavors rotating. Customers can also enjoy six different sipping chocolates, crafted with cacao sourced from Tabasco, alongside coffee, lattes, agua frescas, and milkshakes.

Expert Insight: The arrival of a well-established international brand like El Moro suggests a growing demand for authentic culinary experiences within Los Angeles, potentially influencing other businesses to expand or specialize in similar offerings.

First Impressions

A single churro costs $3. One reviewer described the experience as “orgasmic,” declaring it the best churro tasted outside of Disneyland, and at a significantly lower price point.

Future Prospects

With its central location and late operating hours – open until 11pm Sundays through Thursdays and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays – El Moro is positioned as a convenient dessert option for those enjoying nearby entertainment venues like the Echo or post-meal treats after visiting local taco trucks. It is likely to become a popular destination for both residents and visitors.
