Cycling for Peace: One Man’s Journey Through East Africa

Tomas Samson, an Eritrean cyclist, is currently traversing East Africa with a powerful message: peace, and understanding. As of February 4, 2026, Samson has already cycled approximately 2,000 kilometers, beginning his journey in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. His travels take him through diverse landscapes, from semi-deserts to areas where people live with their livestock in Kenya.

A Mission Beyond Distance

Samson’s journey isn’t focused on reaching a destination, but on the connections made along the way. He emphasizes that the trip is “not about distance, but about connections, learning from each other.” Despite facing challenges like illness and the need to alter his route due to violent conflicts in border regions with South Sudan, he continues his mission.

Connecting Through Shared Humanity

Language barriers haven’t hindered Samson’s ability to connect with people. He’s found that “when you touch people’s hearts, they react in a way you never expected.” He recounts an experience in a northern Kenyan village where a woman adorned his coffee calabash with cowrie shells, a gesture of welcome and connection. He has already met hundreds of people, sharing moments and receiving advice, including the encouragement to “start now” regardless of the size of the goal.

Leveraging Social Media for a Wider Impact

Samson is actively sharing his experiences through TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, where he has over 20,000 followers, primarily from the Eritrean diaspora. He aims to showcase the cultural diversity of East Africa and highlight the wisdom of traditional lifestyles, particularly in relation to living in harmony with nature. He hopes to spark curiosity about the region, countering negative perceptions often associated with war and drought.

Eritrea and the Drive for Change

Samson’s journey is deeply rooted in his experiences in Eritrea, a country governed by President Isaias Afewerki since its independence from Ethiopia in 1993. Eritrea remains largely isolated, with limited internet access and restricted press freedom. Mandatory military service, often extended beyond the initial 18 months, is a significant aspect of life for Eritrean citizens. Samson previously worked as a video editor in the Eritrean Ministry of Information.

From Cultural Events to a Journey for Peace

After traveling to Ethiopia with his band in 2018, Samson chose to remain in Addis Ababa, building a life centered around organizing cycling tours and cultural events. This occurred even as conflicts raged in other parts of the country, such as the Tigray region. His decision to embark on this cycling journey was a personal quest for hope and a desire to change perceptions.

Sustainable Travel and a Peaceful Approach

Samson views cycling as a peaceful and sustainable mode of transportation, emphasizing its “zero carbon emissions” and its ability to connect him with both nature and people. He typically covers 60-80 kilometers per day, occasionally reaching 150 kilometers. He carries everything he needs on his bicycle, seeking to find a place to call home along the way.

Next Stop: Rwanda

Currently pausing in Nairobi, Kenya, Samson plans to continue his journey to Rwanda, a country also affected by regional conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While the ultimate outcome of his journey remains uncertain – “that’s something only God knows” – Samson is committed to continuing conversations and embodying a vision of peaceful coexistence.
