Hamilton soldier who died in Latvia honoured with 21-gun salute at burial near Burlington, Ont.
A somber gathering took place Monday at Woodland Cemetery as dozens mourned the burial of Sebastian Halmagean, a 24-year-old soldier from Hamilton, Ontario, who died in Latvia last month. The circumstances surrounding his death near the Latvian capital of Riga on January 29th are currently under investigation by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND).
A Soldier Remembered
The funeral procession drew a large crowd, with police directing traffic due to full parking lots at the cemetery, which sits between Hamilton and Burlington, Ontario. Just before noon ET, an army vehicle carried Halmagean’s flag-draped casket into the grounds, accompanied by a contingent of soldiers in uniform.
Pallbearers carefully carried the casket across a snow-covered field to the gravesite. A 21-gun salute honored Halmagean’s service, followed by a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace. The flag that had draped his casket was then ceremoniously folded and presented to his family.
Community and Remembrance
Prior to the burial, Halmagean’s family received friends at the Doodsworth & Brown Funeral Home Ancaster Chapel on Sunday, offering an opportunity for the community to express their condolences. The family expressed their gratitude for the support received during this difficult time, according to an online obituary.
Halmagean’s casket arrived at Canadian Forces Base Trenton on February 3rd. His father, Alin Halmagean, shared with CBC Hamilton that his son thoroughly enjoyed his role as a gunner at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick. He also recounted his son’s dedication to helping others, including assisting in extinguishing fires in Newfoundland and Labrador the previous year.
Ned Kuruc, the Member of Parliament for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, described Halmagean’s death as a “tragedy” for the community, noting his personal connection to the family and his long-standing acquaintance with the young soldier, whom he remembered as “full of life” and “really, really smart.”
