IVF and ART procedures to be included in Karnataka CM’s ArK scheme
Bengaluru, Karnataka has taken a significant step toward expanding access to fertility treatments. The state government has approved the inclusion of assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures – specifically in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and frozen embryo transfer (FET) – under the AB-PMJAY CM’s ArK scheme.
Expanding Access to Fertility Care
This initiative is designed to provide support to couples facing infertility who lack the financial resources for advanced treatment. The program will initially operate as a pilot project, extending benefits to 120 Priority Household (PHH) cardholders.
Treatment Options and Coverage
Eligible couples will have access to treatment at government tertiary care hospitals, including district hospitals, medical colleges, and autonomous institutes. Approved private ART centres registered under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act will also participate.
The AB-PMJAY CM’s ArK scheme will provide a one-time benefit covering these cycles. Package rates for the procedures will be determined by the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) expert committee.
Future Considerations
An expert committee, led by the Executive Director of the State Agency for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SAST), is tasked with developing detailed guidelines. These guidelines will cover eligibility criteria, inclusion and exclusion norms, standard operating procedures, and the empanelment of facilities.
After the one-year pilot period, the government has indicated a possible shift in service delivery. If sufficient facilities become available within government hospitals, services may be restricted to those institutions.
