Tunkhannock Swimmer Shatters Records at Les Richards Championships

Tunkhannock High School senior Jaden Baltrusaitis, 18, delivered a dominant performance at the 2026 Les Richards Championships on Saturday, rewriting the record books with three meet records and four overall event wins. His standout swim in the 100-meter freestyle, clocking in at 46.86, not only secured him the victory but also eclipsed a longstanding pool and meet record set back in 2009.

Baltrusaitis’s success wasn’t limited to individual events. He also contributed to record-breaking performances in the 200-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter freestyle relay alongside his teammates, further solidifying Tunkhannock’s presence in the competition.

A Season of Focused Training

The senior swimmer described his mindset heading into Saturday’s events as simply focusing on executing his own race. “Going into the meet, before my events, I just told myself to do what I can and just swim my race. I just wanted to take it out as hard as I could, and just see what happened,” Baltrusaitis explained. This approach clearly paid off, particularly in the 100 free, which he described as an “unreal experience.”

His winning margin in the 50-meter freestyle was remarkably tight, secured by just .01 seconds. “It took me a minute to realise that I won because I really didn’t look at the board,” he admitted, highlighting the intense competition and the importance of every fraction of a second.

The relay victories held special significance, building on previous success. “We broke one of those records last year, and this year, we were able to break it again by a second,” Baltrusaitis noted, emphasizing the collaborative effort and incremental improvements within the team.

Baltrusaitis attributes his success this season to consistent training. He’s been swimming since October, and reports that the team’s “gas tanks are still pretty full,” unlike many competitors who are beginning to taper their training.

Did You Know? Jaden Baltrusaitis’s time of 46.86 in the 100 free broke a record that stood for 17 years.

Beyond the Pool

Outside of competitive swimming, Baltrusaitis enjoys spending time with friends, riding dirt bikes with his father, fishing, and watching movies. He describes himself as “energetic,” a quality that undoubtedly translates to his performance in the water. His favourite food is lasagna, and he dreams of a vacation to Hawaii.

Expert Insight: Baltrusaitis’s ability to maintain peak performance throughout the season, while other teams are beginning to reduce training intensity, suggests a well-managed program and exceptional physical conditioning. This could provide a significant advantage as the championship season progresses.

Looking Ahead

As he looks toward the future, Baltrusaitis is currently in discussions with the Bloomsburg swim team. He also plans to join the Army. He will continue to compete at the collegiate level while fulfilling his military commitment. A potential next step could involve balancing rigorous training schedules with the demands of service.

He identified Jordan Crooks, currently the fastest freestyle swimmer in the world, as an athlete he would like to race. He also expressed a desire to have dinner with Michael Phelps, his coach, and Albert Einstein.
