Johnny Blue Skies: Mutiny After Midnight Album Release Date & Tracklist

Johnny Blue Skies: Mutiny After Midnight Album Release Date & Tracklist

February 13, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Johnny Blue Skies, the current performing name of musician formerly known as Sturgill Simpson, is preparing for the release of his second studio album, Mutiny After Midnight, on March 13. This project marks his first release with his band, the Dark Clouds, and will be available exclusively on vinyl, CD, and cassette.

A Return to Atlantic Records

Simpson previously achieved a breakthrough with his 2016 album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, also released through Atlantic Records. He attributes his return to the label to changes in its leadership and overall direction. Simpson expressed excitement about collaborating with Ian Cripps, co-head of Atlantic Outpost, fulfilling a vision they initially discussed over a decade ago.

Creative Process and Musical Direction

The artist stated he wrote the lyrics for Mutiny After Midnight in response to current events and personal experiences. The album was recorded at Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, owned by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Simpson described the material as being developed spontaneously and revealed the band’s intention was “to make a dance record.”

Did You Know? The new album will be released only on physical media – vinyl, CD, and cassette – foregoing digital distribution platforms.

Mutiny After Midnight follows Johnny Blue Skies’ 2024 debut album, Passage du Desir. Following an extensive tour in 2025 under his new moniker, the artist reportedly encountered issues with concert promoters who insisted on advertising the shows using his original name, Sturgill Simpson.

Expert Insight: The artist’s insistence on performing under a new name, coupled with the promotional challenges encountered, suggests a deliberate effort to establish a distinct artistic identity separate from his previous work and public persona.

As of now, no new tour dates have been announced to support the upcoming album.
