Latvia to Implement Cross-Border Laboratory Data Exchange Across the EU by 2027
The Latvian Digital Health Center, in collaboration with the National Health Service, is spearheading a new initiative titled “Latvian Patient Laboratory Data Exchange.” This project aims to integrate a sophisticated e-health service that facilitates the cross-border exchange of laboratory test results across the European Union.
Project Scope and Implementation
Scheduled to commence in April 2027, the project will rely on the European core service platform, MyHealth@EU. This infrastructure will allow for the gradual sharing of laboratory data with participating EU member states that possess the technical capacity to both transmit and receive such medical records.
The system is designed to provide reciprocal benefits for both patients and medical professionals. When fully operational, EU-based practitioners will be able to access the laboratory results of Latvian patients, while Latvian medical staff will gain the ability to review the laboratory findings of foreign patients treated within Latvia.
Building on Existing Infrastructure
This initiative builds upon the foundation already established by the MyHealth@EU platform, which currently supports the exchange of e-prescriptions and patient health summaries. Currently, Latvia shares e-prescription data with countries such as Estonia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Lithuania, Portugal, Finland, and Croatia.
basic health data for Latvian residents is already accessible to medical professionals in several countries, including the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. As the new laboratory data project rolls out between 2026 and 2027, We see expected that more member states will gradually join this network, potentially expanding the reach of the service across the European bloc.
