Limerick county hurler’s pub damaged by a meat factory worker wielding a knife

February 20, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

A 35-year-old meat factory worker appeared before Kilmallock District Court after an incident involving a kitchen knife and a rural pub. Agnaldo Dos Santos, of Thomastown, Cork, was reportedly intoxicated when removed from Mike Houlihan’s pub on August 29, 2025, by a member of staff.

Incident at Mike Houlihan’s Pub

According to Inspector Gearóid Thompson’s evidence presented in court, Mr. Dos Santos returned to the pub at 4:10 am wielding a large kitchen knife. He then used the knife to cause €500 worth of damage to the pub door.

Did You Know? Mike Houlihan, the owner of the pub, is a well-known former Limerick county hurler.

Judge Patricia Harney commented on the incident, stating, “It must have been a very terrifying experience for a rural publican.”

Legal Proceedings and Admissions

Mr. Dos Santos required a Portuguese interpreter during the court proceedings. His barrister, Nicholas Hall, stated that his client works at Dawn Meats in Cork and has no prior convictions. Mr. Hall also noted that the knife was located in Mr. Dos Santos’s van, prompting the judge to remark that it “should have stayed in the vehicle.”

Expert Insight: The judge’s direction for restorative justice suggests an emphasis on repairing the harm caused to the publican and the community, rather than solely focusing on punitive measures.

Inspector Thompson confirmed that Mr. Dos Santos made full admissions to the gardaí following his arrest and has not been brought to their attention since. The judge instructed Mr. Dos Santos to return to court with compensation for the publican and recommended he write a letter of apology.

Possible Next Steps

The judge also directed Mr. Dos Santos to contact the Probation Service to assess his suitability for a restorative justice program. The Probation Service will determine Mr. Dos Santos is a suitable candidate, leading to a facilitated meeting between him and the publican. Alternatively, if deemed unsuitable, the case may proceed to further court hearings. A possible next step is for Mr. Dos Santos to present evidence of compensation to the court at a future date.
