Local program LAHMB supports mothers through pregnancy and early parenting
Charlene Becker, a key figure at Arizona Youth Partnership (AZYP), was recently honored as Citizen of the Month by Citizens for a Better Community for her dedicated work supporting mothers and families in Gila County, Arizona. The recognition highlights her commitment to providing crucial resources and a supportive environment for women navigating pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood.
A Commitment Beyond the Call of Duty
AZYP Director Julie Craig emphasized that Becker’s dedication extends far beyond a typical job, stating she “doesn’t do it because it’s a job. She does it because it means so much to her.” This sentiment was echoed by Carissa Knauss of AZYP, who shared that Becker is willing to assist mothers “sometimes go in the middle of the night.” This willingness to go above and beyond was central to the Citizen of the Month selection.
Programs Supporting Mothers and Families
Becker oversees a range of programs designed to empower mothers and families, including Healthy Pregnancy and Childbirth Classes, Active Parenting: First Five Years, AIM 4 Teen Moms, and the Linking Actions for Healthy Mothers & Babies (LAHM) Program Peer Support Group. Launched in September 2024 with a three-year grant, LAHMB offers a judgment-free space for pregnant and parenting women to connect, share concerns, and receive support.
Addressing Critical Needs
The LAHMB program meets regularly in Globe, Payson, and San Carlos, providing not only emotional support but also practical assistance like snacks and diapers for attendees. A key focus of LAHMB is to provide a safe space for mothers—particularly those facing addiction—to seek stability and increase the likelihood of remaining with their children rather than entering social services.
Empowering Teen Mothers
In addition to LAHMB, Becker leads AIM 4 Teen Moms (AIM4T), an evidence-based program designed to help young mothers define goals, create plans, and explore contraception options. Participants receive “mom essentials” like car seats, pack and plays, diapers, and gift cards upon completion of the eight-week program, which is offered both virtually and in person.
Accessing Support
Interested individuals can access these programs by visiting the AZYP office at 136 S. Broad St., registering online at azyp.com/lahmb, or contacting Becker directly at [email protected].
