Major search underway for missing man after empty boat found off Gold Coast

Major search underway for missing man after empty boat found off Gold Coast

February 6, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

A large-scale search is underway for a 44-year-old man from Hollywell after his boat was found adrift off the Gold Coast early Friday morning. Police were alerted on Thursday evening when the man’s black half-cabin pleasure craft failed to return to Runaway Bay Marina.

Search Efforts Underway

Water police immediately began searching the surrounding areas and attempted to contact the vessel via radio. The boat was located around 2:00 AM on Friday, approximately 25 nautical miles (about 50 kilometers) south-east of the Gold Coast Seaway. Critically, the boat was found unoccupied.

Condition of the Vessel

Senior Sergeant Shannon grey stated the boat was in good condition and there was no immediately obvious explanation for the man’s absence. “The circumstances as to what happened in the boat are still unknown, and we may never know exactly what happened,” he said. The priority remains locating the missing man, with search efforts continuing through the night and planned for Friday morning.

Did You Know? An Australian Maritime Safety Authority rescue plane flew from Essendon, in Melbourne, to assist in the search on Thursday night.

Experienced Fisherman

Authorities have noted the missing man is an experienced game fisherman with “a lot of marine experience.” The search area is extensive and is expanding towards the Byron Bay region. Police are hoping the man was wearing a life jacket, which would significantly improve his chances of survival if he is in the water.

Expert Insight: The vastness of the search area, combined with the unknown circumstances surrounding the man’s disappearance, presents significant challenges for rescue teams. The possibility of a medical event or unforeseen circumstance at sea cannot be ruled out.

Marine Rescue Point Danger volunteers are assisting police in the multi-agency search, with a crew departing at 8:30 AM on Friday. Conditions offshore are currently calm, with light winds, according to Inspector John Murray.

Ongoing Communications

Volunteer radio operators from Marine Rescue Port Macquarie attempted to contact the vessel overnight, and operators from the Point Danger unit are now assisting with communications. Marine Rescue NSW will continue to support the search as directed by police.
