Man who died at Rotorua geothermal pools named
A man has died following a medical event at a geothermal pool in Rotorua, New Zealand, on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as Robert (Piripi) John Kihi Mita Taupopoki Phillips, a valued member of the local tourism industry.
A Loss for Te Puia
Phillips was a tour guide and evening experience duty manager at Te Puia, a popular tourist attraction known for its geothermal activity and Māori cultural experiences. According to Tim Cossar, chief executive of Te Puia, Phillips had dedicated more than 20 years to hosting visitors, or manuhiri, and will be deeply missed.
Cossar described Phillips as a “long-term and much-loved member of our Te Puia whānau” and a “real character.” He added that Phillips’ spirit will remain connected to the valley he cherished.
The Incident
Emergency services responded to a call around 9:40 pm on Sunday after Phillips was pulled unconscious from the water at The Blueys, a geothermal pool near the Pōhutu Geyser. Despite efforts to revive him, Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Cultural Response and Remembrance
In response to the tragedy, a rāhui – a traditional Māori prohibition – was placed over The Blueys on Monday morning by Te Paetapu o Te Pākira Marae. The rāhui remains in effect until further notice.
Prior to being taken to Whakarewarewa Village, Phillips’ body was led on a final tour of Te Puia, accompanied by a large procession of family, friends, and colleagues. He was then received at Te Pākira Marae.
Looking Ahead
It is possible that authorities may conduct a review of safety protocols at The Blueys following this incident. The duration of the rāhui is currently unknown and will likely be determined by Te Paetapu o Te Pākira Marae. Te Puia may also consider how to best honor Phillips’ memory and contribution to the organization in the coming weeks.
