More than half of women experience hair loss or scalp problems during the menopause

More than half of women experience hair loss or scalp problems during the menopause

February 8, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

More than half of women may experience hair loss or scalp issues during menopause, according to recent findings. A survey revealed that common symptoms during this mid-life hormonal transition include hair shedding, as well as an itchy or flaky scalp.

Understanding the Connection

These findings, published last week, align with existing research demonstrating that menopause can lead to a reduction in moisture and oil production on the skin and scalp. The menopause itself occurs when the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone decline, typically beginning between the ages of 45 and 55, with an average onset around age 51 in the UK.

Did You Know? The survey, conducted by Polytar, found that 53 percent of menopausal women reported experiencing hair loss.

Common Menopausal Symptoms

Beyond hair and scalp changes, the most frequently reported symptoms of menopause include hot flushes, night sweats, mood disturbances, and difficulty sleeping. Vaginal dryness, which can cause discomfort during sexual activity, is also a common experience.

The survey also indicated that approximately one-fifth of premenopausal women experience hair and scalp problems in relation to their menstrual cycle. Ruth Collis, a hair-loss expert based in Sussex, explains that “hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle can have a direct impact on scalp health.”

Collis further notes that these shifts influence oil production, skin-cell turnover, and the scalp’s inflammatory response, potentially leading to flaking, itchiness, and other scalp issues. During menopause, the sustained decrease in oestrogen can contribute to increased dryness, sensitivity, and irritation.

Expert Insight: The increasing attention to hair loss during menopause reflects a growing awareness of the broader impact of hormonal changes on women’s health, and the need for targeted solutions.

Rising Awareness of Hair Loss

The findings come as online searches for “hair loss” and “hair thinning” among women have more than doubled since 2021, according to Google search data. This suggests a growing number of women are actively seeking information and solutions for these concerns.
