New Medical Center Opens in Issé to Combat Rural Healthcare Shortages
The commune of Issé in Loire-Atlantique officially inaugurated its new medical house on June 5, 2026, to combat rural medical desertification. According to Mayor Jean-Marc Lalloué, the facility aims to attract new practitioners and secure local healthcare services through modern infrastructure and coordinated teamwork.
The ceremony included Mayor Lalloué and his municipal team, alongside Marc Makhlouf, the sub-prefect of Châteaubriant-Ancenis, and deputy Jean-Claude Raux. Senator Laurence Garnier and parliamentarian Karine Daniel also attended the event.
Catherine Ciron represented the Châteaubriant-Derval Community of Communes, delivering congratulations from president Alain Hunault. Erwan Amioni, a mission officer for the Regional Health Agency (ARS), represented regional health authorities.
Why was the Issé medical house built?
Mayor Jean-Marc Lalloué stated the project was a response to the declining availability of local care. The municipality worked with the ARS, the Territorial Professional Health Community (CPTS), and local health professionals to identify three specific priorities.
First, the facility aims to break professional isolation by supporting the preference of modern healthcare providers for coordinated teamwork. Second, the municipality sought to attract a new generation of practitioners by providing modern and convivial infrastructure.
Finally, the project intends to secure the local economic fabric. By providing attractive premises, the town hopes to maintain the local pharmacy and accommodate new paramedical offices near the town’s shops.
How was the project funded and constructed?
The total cost of the construction reached 430,193.86 € HT. The project was designed by the Nantes-based firm Quadra Architecture, represented by Gaëtan and Théodora Renard.
To avoid increasing taxes for residents, the municipality secured a funding plan involving the State via the DETR/DSIL grant (105,000€) and contributions from the Châteaubriant-Derval Community of Communes (50,000€), with additional support from the ARS.
Local artisans and companies from the Castelbriantais region carried out the work, including Sararrols, Coignard, Sithra, lanoé, EMCG, and Hervé Thermique. Municipal technical services, supported by Guillaume Cléramaux and Julien Gutton, managed the weekly schedule to ensure the deadline was met.
What happens next for rural health in the region?
Erwan Amioni of the ARS indicated that this type of structure provides the necessary conditions to attract both generalists and specialists. Such facilities may serve as a model for other rural areas facing similar shortages.
Sub-prefect Marc Makhlouf stated that the State intends to continue supporting rural communes that invest in their territory to guarantee equal access to public services. Future investments in similar rural hubs could follow if these structured approaches prove successful in retaining medical staff.
