Supporting New Voices in Playwriting
Beyond the awards themselves, several new commissions were announced. Colt Coeur, in partnership with Shea Theatricals, awarded playwright Alex Lin the inaugural Beacon Commission for her play, The Translator. This commission supports women and nonbinary artists and aims to uplift work that responds to a recent Executive Order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” The Movement Theatre Company, in collaboration with The Black List, announced Ankita Raturi as the recipient of their joint Ladder Commission and Carolina Đỗ as the recipient of the Jody Falco and Jeffrey Steinman Commission.
Alex Lin’s play, The Translator, is inspired by Tye Leung, the first Chinese-American woman to vote in a U.S. Election. Ankita Raturi’s work explores themes of cultural identity and colonization, while Carolina Đỗ focuses on theatre as a tool for rebellion and collective healing. These commissions represent a commitment to fostering diverse voices and perspectives in the American theatre landscape.
Looking Ahead
The recipients of these commissions will have opportunities to develop their work through workshops and collaborations. It is likely that these projects will be presented to audiences in the coming years, contributing to the ongoing evolution of off-Broadway theatre. The Alleyway Theatre in Buffalo, New York, also announced the recipient of their Maxim Mazumdar New Play Award, Kevin Cirone, for his play His Girl Watson: A Sherlock Noir, which will receive a world premiere in June.
