Oh, My Word! “Doctor Who: The Wheel in Space” Arrives on Vinyl
As anticipation builds for the return of Doctor Who in Christmas 2026, fans have a new way to experience classic adventures. Demon Music Group is releasing audio versions of past serials on vinyl, with the recent release of The Wheel in Space joining the previously announced The Rescue for Record Store Day.
A Journey to the Stars
The Wheel in Space originally aired in six episodes between April 27, 1968, and June 1, 1968. It marked the end of the fifth season of Doctor Who and featured Patrick Troughton as The Second Doctor. The story begins with The Doctor and his companion Jamie McCrimmon stranded on a spaceship, leading them to a space station under threat from the Cybermen.
Introducing a New Companion
This serial is particularly notable for the introduction of Zoe Heriot, played by Wendy Padbury. Zoe would become a recurring character, appearing in eight subsequent storylines. The Wheel in Space also represented the second time Troughton’s Doctor encountered the Cybermen during that season.
A Fragmented Legacy
Unfortunately, much of The Wheel in Space has been lost to time. Only episodes 3 and 6 remain in the BBC archives. The remaining episodes were destroyed in the 1970s, though a collector later donated a copy of Part 3 to the BBC. Reconstructions using available footage and audio were released in 2017 and can be viewed on Britbox today. An animated version of the first episode is also available on DVD as a bonus feature on The Macra Terror.
The Power of Audio
Despite the missing visual elements, the story continues to resonate with fans. The audio presentation of The Wheel in Space, originally released on CD in 2004, is now available on 3 LPs of translucent “Bernalium Blue” vinyl. The package, mastered by Phil Kinrade, features artwork depicting a Cyberman and includes illustrated jackets with episode credits.
The vinyl set includes all six episodes, divided across three LPs: LP 1 features Episodes 1 and 2, LP 2 contains Episodes 3 and 4, and LP 3 presents Episodes 5 and 6.
