Commercial Explosion Prompts Evacuation in Canby, Oregon
Canby Fire Chief Matt Dale reported that one of two high-pressure tanks used in the metal heat-treating process at Kittyhawk Products exploded, causing the roof of the building to be blown off. While officials do not anticipate another explosion, the possibility remains, leading to the continued evacuation order.
The evacuation order, initially issued Tuesday night, will remain in effect until at least 8 a.m. On Wednesday, February 5, 2026, to allow the remaining tank to cool for an estimated 12 to 16 hours. At that time, fire officials will reassess the situation and determine whether to lift the evacuation.
Three employees were present at the time of the explosion. One sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Chief Dale emphasized that, fortunately, there was no loss of life and the property damage is repairable, calling it “a very successful outcome for a very devastating situation.”
Video footage obtained by KATU News showed the explosion sending debris into the air and causing visible damage to the building and surrounding area. The sound of the explosion was described as tremendous. Firefighters were able to extinguish most of the fires shortly before 7 p.m. On Tuesday.
Chief Dale stated that no hazardous materials were released into the environment as a result of the explosion. He also noted that “everything worked as it should” in terms of the emergency response.
