Oscar Onley: Ineos Grenadiers Debut & Tour de France Focus
Oscar Onley, 23, has begun a new chapter in his cycling career, making his debut with Ineos Grenadiers at the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal on Wednesday. However, the team isn’t placing immediate pressure on the young rider, as their primary focus for the 2026 season is set on the Tour de France in July.
A Shift in Plans
Onley’s initial racing schedule for 2026 included the Tour Down Under in Australia. However, following a late December transfer from Picnic PostNL to Ineos Grenadiers, the team adjusted his season to align with their overarching goals. According to Onley, the team’s priorities are “no secret” – the Tour de France is the central objective for both himself and the Ineos Grenadiers organization.
Building Towards July
The acquisition of Onley is a significant move for Ineos Grenadiers, signaling their intent to once again contend for a top position on the Tour de France podium. Onley and Vauquelin both recently completed training with the team in Tenerife before beginning their first race in Ineos Grenadiers kit.
Alongside Onley and Vauquelin, the Ineos Grenadiers team at Volta ao Algarve includes Thymen Arensman, Filippo Ganna, Kim Heiduk, Laurens De Plus, and Bob Jungels.
Familiar Territory
This isn’t Onley’s first time competing at Volta ao Algarve. He participated in the race three years prior, in 2023, where he secured the youth classification and finished 12th overall while riding for Picnic PostNL. He described the race as a “nice way to just start the season.”
Currently in his fourth season in the WorldTour, Onley is approaching this return to the 2.Pro-ranked event as a fresh start. He emphasized his focus on understanding the team’s dynamics, stating, “I’m still learning where all the drawers are on the bus.” He doesn’t feel pressure to perform immediately, prioritizing team cohesion and enjoyment.
Looking Ahead
Following Volta ao Algarve, Onley’s schedule includes a debut at Paris-Nice from March 8-15, and potentially Volta a Catalunya from March 23-29. He has traditionally used the Tour de Suisse as preparation for the Tour de France, a pattern he may follow again this year.
Should he compete in Catalunya, it would be a quick turnaround after Paris-Nice, but Onley noted it’s a race he enjoys due to its proximity to his home territory.
