Pair of First Team Honorees Lead Wheeling Men’s Swimming on Day One of GMAC/MEC Swimming & Diving Championships

Canton, Ohio hosted the opening day of the 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC)/Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships, where the Wheeling University Men’s Swimming team demonstrated strong early performance. The Cardinals currently hold third place leading all MEC teams by a margin of 10 points after the first day of competition. Five All-MEC honours were earned by the team to start the championship.

Strong Start for Wheeling in Championship Competition

The Wheeling team began the finals with a third-place finish in the 200-Yard Medley Relay, with the team of Aris Dimakis, Efe Kucuk, Meiko Schonekes, and Nathaniel Oliveras completing the race two seconds faster than their seed time. This performance secured First Team All-MEC honours and set a new program record, besting the rest of the MEC field by half a second. The momentum carried into the individual events, where Segmen Duygun earned another First Team All-MEC honour for the Cardinals.

Duygun Shatters Seed Time in 1000-Yard Freestyle

Segmen Duygun competed in the 1000-Yard Freestyle, improving his seed time of 9:53.12 to finish in 9:42.44 and secure third place. He finished 21 seconds behind Findlay’s Matteo Filippi. Sophomore Nathan Reigel also had a strong showing in the event, achieving a season-best time of 10:22.82, 16 seconds faster than his seed time. Matthew Charlesworth finished 17th overall in his first attempt at the event, with a time of 10:38.32.

Cardinal Representation in 200 Individual Medley

The 200 Individual Medley saw significant participation from the Cardinals, with at least one swimmer in each of the three finals. Archie Pigott earned Second Team All-MEC honours with a time of 1:55.03, while Efe Kucuk finished just behind him in 1:56.24, missing an All-MEC honour by one second. Meiko Schonekes added a 13th-place finish in the B Final with a time of 1:57.62, and Levi Parker finished 24th overall in the C Final with a time of 2:05.57.

Relay Victory Caps Off Day One

In the 50 Freestyle, Aris Dimakis led the Cardinals in the B Finals, finishing with a time of 21.42. Sarp Killic, Nathaniel Olivares, and Patrick Kirby competed in the C Final, with Killic leading the group in 18th place (21.47), followed by Olivares (21.55) and Kirby (21.93). The day concluded with a First Team All-MEC victory in the Men’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, with the team of Dimakis, Quintin Tayali, Killic, and Kirby finishing with a time of 1:25.25.
