Peggy Ann Hodges Austin, 83, of Boone, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at Deerfield Ridge Nursing Facility. Born on July 28, 1942, in Watauga County, she dedicated her life to caring for others.

A Life Dedicated to Nurturing

Peggy’s life was defined by a deep love for others, a calling she fulfilled through both personal care and her work in child care facilities. Over the years, she lovingly nurtured many children. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Arnett and Beulah Bentley, her half-sister Clara Hayes, and her brothers Jay Hodges and Oscar Hodges.

Family and Legacy

Peggy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bill Austin, her son Martin Austin and his wife Kim of Hickory, North Carolina, and her daughter Billie Clanton and her husband Jeff, also of Hickory, North Carolina. She leaves behind a legacy of six grandchildren: Sean Austin and his wife Melody of Matthews, North Carolina; Ana Austin of Olathe, Kansas; River Austin of Hickory, North Carolina; Hunter Clanton and his fiancée Brisa of Asheboro, North Carolina; Davis Clanton and fiancée Madisyn of Hickory, North Carolina; and Chase Clanton of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Did You Know? Peggy and Bill Austin enjoyed spending time in Myrtle Beach with friends they treasured over the years.

Peggy was a proud great-grandmother to Vicent and Zander Austin of Matthews, North Carolina. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish her memory.

A Tradition of Joy

Peggy found great joy in the tradition of their Choose and Cut Tree Farm, where she and Bill shared in the happiness of families selecting their Christmas trees. This was a source of great fulfillment for her.
