Ragusa & Cannizzaro Hospital: Enhanced Breast Care for Local Women

Ragusa & Cannizzaro Hospital: Enhanced Breast Care for Local Women

January 25, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

A significant step forward in healthcare access for the Iblean territory is underway through a collaboration between the ASP of Ragusa and the Cannizzaro Emergency Hospital of Catania. The two healthcare organizations have signed an agreement to provide specialized senology – Breast Unit – consultations and services, aiming to strengthen assistance for women with breast pathologies.

Enhanced Breast Care Through Collaboration

The agreement, formalized under deliberation number 35 on January 15th, is for one year with the possibility of renewal. It will allow patients in the area to access highly specialized expertise from one of the region’s leading breast centers. Dr. Francesca Catalano, Director of the Senology U.O.C. at Cannizzaro, and her multidisciplinary Breast Unit team are central to this initiative.

Did You Know? The agreement stipulates that clinical and surgical activities will take place at the Breast Surgery U.O.S.D. of the Giovanni Paolo II hospital in Ragusa.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

Clinical and surgical activities will be conducted at the U.O.S.D. of Breast Surgery at the Giovanni Paolo II Hospital in Ragusa, following a jointly agreed-upon schedule. Patients will benefit from a team of professionals spanning surgical senology, radiotherapy, medical oncology, diagnostic senology, pathology, molecular biology, genetic medicine, psychology, and rehabilitation. This collaborative approach aims to define personalized diagnostic, therapeutic, and care pathways based on the clinical and biological characteristics of each tumor.

The team will also be available for screening activities on designated days. Each clinical case will be discussed within the GOM – Multidisciplinary Oncological Group – a key component of the Breast Unit model. Following this collective evaluation, surgical interventions will be planned based on operating room availability. Once histological examination results are available, the case will return to the GOM to define subsequent treatment phases, involving oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and other specialists.

Looking Ahead: Advanced Reconstruction Techniques

If organizational conditions permit, the potential activation of breast reconstruction using the Linfo-DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) technique is being considered. This advanced micro-surgical procedure utilizes autologous tissue – skin and fat from the abdomen – to recreate a natural-looking breast without the use of prosthetics, while preserving abdominal muscles.

Expert Insight: The emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach, with cases reviewed by a GOM, reflects a growing understanding in oncology that the most effective treatment plans are those developed through collaborative expertise.

Beyond direct patient care, the agreement includes a strong educational component. Professionals from Cannizzaro will provide a structured program of theoretical and practical updates for medical and healthcare personnel at the ASP of Ragusa, through participation in surgical sessions, shared management of complex cases, and specialized outpatient activities.
