Rivian Adds A Sport Mode To All R1 EVs On The Road
Rivian, the California-based electric vehicle manufacturer, has released a significant software update – version 2026.03 – designed to enhance the performance and functionality of its R1S and R1T models, regardless of their production year. The update introduces new features and expands access to existing ones, alongside a novel Apple Watch integration.
Expanded Performance Features
Previously limited to Performance Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor variants, Rivian’s Sport Mode is now available across all R1S and R1T models, including base Dual-Motor configurations with both NMC and LFP battery types. Selecting Sport Mode optimizes power delivery for quicker acceleration. When Sport Mode is engaged, the ride height of compatible vehicles will now automatically adjust to “Standard,” a change from the previous behavior of automatic suspension lowering.
Launch Mode Accessibility
The highly-anticipated Launch Mode, which prepares the vehicle for rapid acceleration from a standstill, is also becoming more widely available. Until now, it was exclusive to second-generation Quad-Motor R1T and R1S models. The update extends Launch Mode functionality to first-generation Quad-Motor models and both generations of Dual-Motor Performance EVs. Activation requires selecting Sport Mode, pressing a flag icon, and simultaneously holding the brake and accelerator pedals.
Apple Watch Integration
A dedicated Apple Watch app has been launched, providing Rivian owners with a new level of vehicle control. First-generation R1S and R1T owners can now utilize their Apple Watch as a digital key, enabling locking and unlocking via a screen tap. While second-generation models already feature proximity-based digital key functionality, this app extends that capability to older vehicles. With the app open and connected via Bluetooth, first-generation owners can even put their vehicle into drive without a physical key or iPhone.
