Rural Iowa hospital to receive surgery robot through federal grant program
Amidst national concerns about potential impacts from changes to Medicaid funding, several rural hospitals in Eastern Iowa are poised to benefit from a separate component of recent federal legislation. UnityPoint Health Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa, Iowa, has been awarded $3 million to acquire a da Vinci surgical robot through the new Rural Health Transformation Program.
Expanding Surgical Capabilities in Rural Iowa
The decision to apply for the grant followed a careful evaluation of the hospital’s needs, according to Eric Briesemeister, CEO of Jones Regional Medical Center. “We went through a process and evaluated what would be most useful for us. And the one project we came up with was applying for the da Vinci robot, and so that’s what we submitted,” Briesemeister said.
The hospital indicated that the purchase would not have been possible without the federal funding. Currently, patients in Jones County requiring robotic surgery must travel to Cedar Rapids for treatment. This presents logistical challenges, not only for patients but also for their caregivers, who must arrange for transportation to and from surgery.
Addressing Access Barriers
Briesemeister highlighted the importance of local access to advanced medical technology. “But that can be a barrier for a lot of folks, having to travel. And not just them having to travel, but their caregiver having to travel. So, you’ve got to find someone to take you and bring you home from surgery,” he explained.
Jones Regional Medical Center is not alone in receiving this support. Hospitals in Elkader, Oelwein, and Decorah have also been awarded federal grants for new equipment through the Rural Health Transformation Program. The hospital anticipates the da Vinci robot will be operational this fall.
