San Bernardino County reports first measles case since 2023

San Bernardino County reports first measles case since 2023

February 8, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

Health officials in San Bernardino County have confirmed the first case of measles within the county since 2023. The case involves a child visiting from another state who had not been vaccinated against measles.

Rising Cases and Potential Exposure

This case is separate from recent measles infections linked to international travel and cases confirmed in nearby counties. Specifically, it is unrelated to cases recently identified at a Disney park in Orange County. The infected child visited the Walmart Supercenter in Ontario on January 29th, between noon and 3 p.m., and health officials are currently investigating potential exposures at that location.

A Broader Trend

The emergence of this case reflects a concerning trend across the United States. Measles cases have been increasing in recent years, coinciding with declining vaccination rates. Lower immunization coverage allows the highly contagious virus to spread more easily within communities.

Did You Know? Last year, the U.S. Saw 2,276 confirmed measles cases, the highest yearly total since the early 1990s.

Orange County has recently confirmed two cases of measles, and Los Angeles County has reported three. This highlights a regional increase in activity.

Symptoms and Precautions

Public health officials are urging anyone feeling unwell or who believes they may have been exposed to seek immediate medical attention. Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, and red, watery eyes, in addition to the characteristic rash.

Symptoms typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure. An infected person can be contagious approximately four days before the rash appears and for up to four days afterward.

Expert Insight: The resurgence of measles underscores the critical role of vaccination in protecting both individual health and broader public health. Declining vaccination rates create vulnerabilities that allow this highly contagious disease to regain a foothold.

San Bernardino County Health Officer Dr. Sharon Wang emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, “Vaccines are our best defense against infectious diseases, protecting both individuals and the wider community.” She added, “Staying up to date with vaccinations is a key step in safeguarding public health and saving lives.”

So far this year, 733 confirmed measles cases have been reported nationwide. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 95% of those infected were either unvaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown.
