San Diego Valentine’s Day Weddings: County Clerk Offers Special Ceremonies
San Diego County is offering couples a unique Valentine’s Day experience this Saturday, with the Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk’s (ARCC) office opening its doors for special wedding ceremonies. More than 150 couples are scheduled to be married, capitalizing on a tradition that saw 100 weddings conducted last year when the holiday fell on a Friday.
A Saturday Celebration of Love
Typically closed on Saturdays, the ARCC will open its most popular location at the historic County Administration Center in Downtown San Diego. The decision, made by Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Jordan Z. Marks, aims to provide additional opportunities for couples to celebrate their commitment on Valentine’s Day. Marriage rooms and outdoor arbors will offer views of San Diego Bay.
Dedicated Staff and Expanded Services
Dozens of county employees are volunteering their time to facilitate the ceremonies, issuing marriage licenses, acting as officiants and providing marriage certificates on-site – a faster turnaround than the usual seven to ten day wait. Employees are embracing the spirit of the day, with festive attire and a potluck planned.
A Community Effort
Beyond the core services, the event will feature additional touches to enhance the experience. A craft club will offer free heart-shaped mementos, vendors will donate treats and mocktails, and the coffee kiosk will sell Valentine’s Day-themed items. The Larry Himmel Foundation is also contributing, coordinating the giveaway of 20 free weddings – ten on a first-come, first-served basis and ten via a radio contest.
Limited Availability and Walk-Ins
Initial appointments, opened on December 27, were fully booked by January 20, prompting the ARCC to expand capacity from 82 to 120, and finally to 165 appointments. As of Friday, only seven appointments remained available. Staff will attempt to accommodate walk-ins between 8 a.m. And 5 p.m., and are prepared to handle 15 to 20 weddings per hour.
