Scott Hansen Appointed Crusaders Head Coach for 2027

Scott Hansen Appointed Crusaders Head Coach for 2027

May 28, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Sports

The Crusaders have announced the appointment of former All Blacks assistant coach Scott Hansen as their new head coach for the 2027 season. Hansen will succeed Rob Penney, who is set to depart the organization following the 2026 Super Rugby playoffs.

A Transition of Leadership

Rob Penney will continue to lead the team through the remainder of the 2026 season. Penney’s tenure will span three seasons, highlighted by a Super Rugby title victory in 2025, contributing to the team’s record of eight titles in nine years.

Reflecting on his time with the club, Penney described himself as a “deeply passionate Canterbury man” with the team’s “Red and Black colours etched into my DNA.” He noted that the values of the Crusaders were born out of Canterbury, making the role a natural fit.

Did You Know? Scott Hansen has a long history with the franchise, having played in the Crusaders’ inaugural season in 1996 and is identified as “Crusader number 25.”

The Return of Scott Hansen

Hansen brings a wealth of experience to the head coaching role, having previously served as an assistant coach for the Crusaders from 2020 to 2023. In 2024, he moved into an assistant role with the All Blacks alongside former Crusaders coach Scott Robertson.

Hansen’s departure from the international stage occurred in January after Scott Robertson was fired by the All Blacks. New coach Dave Rennie subsequently selected his own coaching staff, leading to Hansen’s exit.

Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge praised Hansen’s “deep understanding of the game” and stated that he would set “high standards.” Mansbridge added that Hansen brings “clarity, discipline and a genuine love for helping people be better.”

Expert Insight: Samantha Carter notes that by appointing a former player and assistant coach, the Crusaders are prioritizing cultural continuity. This strategy may allow the club to maintain its high performance levels by installing a leader who is already deeply integrated into the region’s rugby identity.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Hansen, who was born in Christchurch and raised in Lyttelton, expressed pride in the opportunity to serve the region again. He described the club as his “home.”

As the team enters its next phase, the transition could be influenced by the outcome of the 2026 finals campaign. Penney believes the current squad is “very capable of going the whole way,” which may provide Hansen with a championship-caliber foundation when he officially takes over.
