Mercedes-AMG is making a deliberate move away from the four-cylinder engines that recently characterized models like the GLC 43, opting instead for the more traditional and, according to many enthusiasts, more satisfying inline-six configuration. The 2027 GLC 53 embodies this change, signaling a broader trend within the AMG lineup.

The Return of the Six-Cylinder Engine

The new GLC 53 boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, delivering 443 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. This represents a significant upgrade over the previous four-cylinder engine in the GLC 43, which produced 416 hp and 369 lb-ft. The engine utilizes a hybrid twin-charging system, combining an exhaust gas turbocharger with an electric auxiliary compressor to eliminate turbo lag and provide instant torque.

This isn’t simply a return to a familiar layout; it’s a technologically advanced implementation. Upgrades include a new cylinder head with improved intake and exhaust ports, and a new intake camshaft. The engine also features a temporary overboost function, increasing torque to 472 lb-ft for up to 10 seconds.

The GLC 53’s performance figures are impressive. With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, reaching a top speed of 167 mph.
