South Jersey Snowstorm: Salt & Ice Melt Shortages Ahead of Weekend
South Jersey residents are preparing for another potential snowstorm, but a surge in demand following recent winter weather has led to shortages of essential supplies like rock salt and ice melt. Customers are finding it increasingly difficult to secure these items as hardware stores struggle to keep up with demand.
Supply Chain Strain and Customer Response
The difficulty in obtaining supplies is impacting residents across the region. Eric Davies, of Cherry Hill, expressed a common sentiment, stating, “Very sick of it, ready for spring, that first nice day of being able to open the windows and get some fresh air in the house.” Many are bracing for several inches of additional snowfall.
Deanna Francesconi of Haddon Township anticipated the shortage and visited Westmont Ace Hardware. She explained her proactive approach, saying, “I said to him, ‘We’re gonna go today because the closer it gets to Sunday, the more they won’t have any more salt.'”
Hardware Stores Face Depleted Stock
Bill Getzinger, owner of Westmont Ace Hardware, confirmed the increased demand. “People are starting to panic a little bit. The people that got shut out during the last storm, making sure they have their shovel, they have their salt, and are ready to go,” he said. By Friday night, Westmont Ace Hardware was completely sold out of ice melt, despite having only one pallet remaining.
The situation is even more acute at Cartun Hardware in Camden, which has already exhausted its entire salt supply. Owner David Garrison attributes the shortages to broader supply chain issues and an unusually harsh winter season.
Garrison stated that in early January, he was informed that 22 out of 25 brands of salt were unavailable for the remainder of the season. Currently, his supplier has no calcium, blends, or pet-safe options available. Customers are reportedly expressing frustration at the lack of available products.
Shifting Demand and Alternative Purchases
The lack of salt has prompted some customers to seek alternative solutions. Garrison noted, “Everyone’s coming in saying, ‘Can I have salt, can I get salt?'” He also reported a significant increase in the purchase of shovels, with the store selling its entire spring order to meet the demand for tools to manage ice and packed snow.
