Styria and Montenegro Sign Strategic Economic Partnership

Styria and Montenegro Sign Strategic Economic Partnership

June 20, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Montenegro’s Economic Minister Nik Gjeloshaj and Styria’s Deputy Governor Manuela Khom have signed a partnership agreement in Podgorica to boost economic cooperation. The deal focuses on renewable energy, infrastructure, and tourism as Montenegro works toward its goal of joining the European Union by 2028.

Did You Know? Montenegro has used the Euro as its currency since 2002, despite not being a member of the European Union.

Why are Styria and Montenegro partnering now?

The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in sectors where Styria possesses established technology and Montenegro sees growth potential. According to Manuela Khom, there is significant interest in infrastructure, tourism, and renewable energy.

Why are Styria and Montenegro partnering now?

Entering the market now offers a strategic advantage. Herbert Ritter, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, stated that those present today will be part of the EU market tomorrow because Montenegro is close to accession.

Karl Hartleb, Managing Director of the Internationalization Center, noted that investing before EU membership may be easier. He suggested that investors could potentially undertake actions now that may not be possible once stricter EU rules apply.

How will this impact energy and infrastructure?

Montenegro currently relies on a coal power plant for 40 percent of its electricity. Bernhard Puttinger, Managing Director of Green Tech Valley, stated this must be replaced by green energy from wind, photovoltaics, and hydropower.

Styrian firms intend to provide the necessary technology for this transition. Martin Fahrenberger, Managing Director of MM Forsttechnik, said they aim to support Montenegro using forestry knowledge and cable crane technology.

Expert Insight: Samantha Carter notes that the timing of this agreement is a calculated move to capture “first-mover advantage.” By establishing footprints before the 2028 target date, Styrian firms may secure market positions before the regulatory environment tightens under EU law.

What specific technical challenges are being addressed?

Water quality is a primary concern for local infrastructure. Rudolf Edlinger, Managing Director of Aqua Engineering, reported that a waterworks facility suffers from turbidity caused by “Kastwasser.”

Edlinger stated that water quality falls outside EU limits for three to four months of the year. Consequently, the facility must construct a water treatment plant to meet these standards.

What is the political significance of the agreement?

The visit aligns with Styria’s “West Balkan Strategy.” Manuela Khom stated that the region is viewed as a future market and an integral part of Europe that belongs in the European Union.

Khom indicated that supporting Montenegro, which is leading the way in the region, serves as a signal of support for the entire Western Balkans.
