Tully girls volleyball outlasts Remsen in 5 sets, reaches 1st section final in 4 years: ‘Got over the semifinal hump’
After a dominant 2021-22 season where they went undefeated and secured a Section III title, the Tully girls volleyball team faced challenges in the sectional semifinals for three consecutive years. However, the 2025-26 season brought a renewed sense of purpose and a return to championship contention.
Overcoming the Semifinal Hurdle
On Wednesday, the third-seeded Black Knights battled to a 3-2 victory over second-seeded Remsen in the Class D semifinal round. This hard-fought win propelled Tully to its first sectional final appearance in four years.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, with Tully taking the first set 26-24. Remsen responded with wins of 25-23 in the next two sets, tying the match at 2-2 after a 25-21 victory in the fourth. Tully dominated the final set, winning 15-8.
Strategic Adjustments and Team Strength
Coach Jeremy Cook praised his team’s resilience and ability to make adjustments during the match. He highlighted the importance of defense, calling it the team’s “bread and butter.” Cook noted that the team shifted their mindset and executed adjustments effectively, making it difficult for opponents to secure a win in close matches.
This season, Tully transitioned to Class D after competing in Class C for several years. Coach Cook believed this change in classification presented a favorable opportunity, avoiding formidable Class C programs like Mount Markham and Beaver River.
