Utah ends GCU D1 Men’s Hockey’s 12-game winning streak

Utah ends GCU D1 Men’s Hockey’s 12-game winning streak

January 28, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Sports

A dominant 12-game winning streak came to an end Friday night for the Grand Canyon University Men’s Hockey team, as they fell 4-2 to the University of Utah at AZ Ice Arcadia in Phoenix. The loss marked a turning point for the No. 13 ranked Lopes against the No. 12 Utes, a nationally competitive matchup that highlighted the importance of special teams play.

A Tale of Two Teams

The contest was closely fought, particularly during a back-and-forth second period where both teams generated scoring chances. Utah ultimately gained the edge with 34 shots on goal to GCU’s 28, but the Lopes remained competitive in five-on-five play. Two power-play goals for the Utes proved to be the decisive factor, despite a 30-save performance from GCU goalie Dmytro Kubrytskyi.

Did You Know? The Lopes’ 12-game winning streak represented the longest in the program’s history.

Second Period Surge

Despite the special teams struggles, the Lopes demonstrated resilience in the second period. Freshman Evan Leden opened the scoring for GCU, tying the game at 1-1 with an assist from Caden Henrikson. Six minutes later, Benjamin Oakland capitalized on a power play opportunity to even the score once more at 2-2.

However, Utah responded in the third period, securing the win with two more goals – including another on the power play. With just under four minutes remaining, GCU pulled Kubrytskyi in an attempt to generate offense, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Weekend Follow-Up

The teams met again on Saturday, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for GCU. The second game, like the first, saw all goals scored during the second period. Triston Tabucol scored the lone goal for the Lopes 12 minutes into the frame.

Expert Insight: The consecutive losses, following a lengthy winning streak, underscore the competitive nature of collegiate hockey and the critical importance of disciplined play and capitalizing on power play opportunities.

Looking ahead, the Lopes are scheduled to travel to Tucson to face the University of Arizona Wildcats on Thursday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 1 PM. They will then return to AZ Ice Arcadia for their final two home games of the season against UNLV on Thursday and Friday, February 5 and 6.
