Utah Ski Team Wins Nevada Invitational with Top-10 Finishes in Giant Slalom
RENO, Nev. – The University of Utah Ski Team secured a decisive victory at the Nevada Invitational, concluding Tuesday with strong performances in the giant slalom races at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. The Utes finished with a total of 317 points, outpacing competitors from Colorado and Denver in the eight-team, alpine-only competition.
Utah Dominates Nevada Invitational
Utah’s success was built on a solid foundation established during Sunday’s slalom events. Colorado finished a close second with 309 points, while Denver rounded out the top three with 288 points. The Utes demonstrated consistent strength across both men’s and women’s events, placing four athletes within the top-10 overall.
Strong Individual Performances
Melanie Dahlberg led the Utah women, finishing fifth in Tuesday’s giant slalom with a time of 2:00.90 – a margin of just two-hundredths of a second. On the men’s side, Sindre Myklebust and Johs Braathen Herland achieved a 5-6 finish, posting times of 1:57.48 and 1:57.55 respectively. Harry Hoffman also contributed with an 11th-place finish (1:58.74).
Head alpine coach JJ Johnson emphasized the team’s collective effort. “For how things have been building up for us this year, to win an alpine-only meet was so fun,” Johnson stated. “And to do it with just three guys—everyone had to finish—was good.”
Looking Ahead
The Utes will now shift their focus to the Denver Invitational, where the Nordic team will compete this weekend at the Frisco Nordic Center in Frisco, Colorado. The alpine team is currently in third place at the halfway point of the Denver Invitational. Utah is slated to host the alpine portion of the Utah Invitational from February 22-24 at the Spencer F. Eccles Olympic Mountain Center at the Utah Olympic Park.
