Valpurģi: Jauno mākslinieku festivāls – pieteikties!
The Latvian Cultural Academy (LKA) will once again be a hub for music and contemporary art enthusiasts on May 15th, as it hosts the 19th annual “Valpurģi” festival. This year’s event promises a diverse program including musical performances, art installations, a selection of short films from the LKA National Film School, and other creative activities.
A Festival Rooted in Tradition
“Valpurģi” is an annual festival that symbolically marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new creative cycle. Its origins trace back to the 8th century, when Walpurgis Night was celebrated as a time for purification, and renewal. Historically, the night involved symbolically burning away negativity to make way for fresh starts, with traditions also influenced by Swedish customs.
The Symbolism of Fire
This year, the festival centres around the theme of the fire cycle – a symbol of transformation, courage, and rebirth. Glowing embers represent hidden potential and the awakening of creative impulses, while flames symbolize energy, movement, and the power of change.
Festival organizer Anete Zaļepska emphasizes the festival’s spirit of exploration, stating, ““Valpurģi” have always been about breaking boundaries and genres. This year, through the symbolism of fire, we invite you to embrace change and experience personal transformation.”
Lizete Beikmane, also a festival organizer, encourages emerging artists to participate, saying, “If your creative impulse is like glowing embers searching for a place to ignite, now is the time to light it on the “Valpurģi” stage! It’s an opportunity for new performers and artists to challenge themselves and prove their worth.”
Artists are invited to submit their music, performances, or installations to be part of the festival’s artistic program. Submissions are being accepted through March 8th via this online form.
Tickets are available online and their price will increase as the festival approaches. The festival is intended for attendees 18 years of age and older.
