Traditional curative radiation treatments for prostate cancer can be lengthy and disruptive, often requiring four to eight weeks of daily visits. ADAPT-25 seeks to dramatically shorten this timeline, potentially condensing treatment from as many as 40 visits to just two days. This reduction in treatment duration could significantly improve the quality of life for men battling the disease.

One participant, 77-year-old Mike Miles, who was diagnosed last January, has already completed two doses of the new radiation therapy. Miles reported experiencing minimal side effects, noting that the most uncomfortable aspect of the treatment was simply filling his bladder with water beforehand.

Expert Insight: Reducing the overall dosage and duration of radiation therapy, as ADAPT-25 aims to do, could potentially mitigate the risk of long-term side effects, such as the development of secondary cancers. This is a critical consideration in cancer treatment planning.

Early indicators suggest the treatment is having a positive impact on Miles’ condition. His prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, a key indicator of prostate cancer activity, decreased from 13 to 1.3 within a week of treatment, falling below levels of concern.

If the trial continues to demonstrate positive outcomes, the ADAPT-25 program is slated to expand to BC Cancer centres in Surrey and Abbotsford this summer.
