Virginia Beach: Heroes Rescue Driver From Sinking SUV in Freezing Water

January 22, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

A quick response from bystanders prevented a potentially tragic outcome in Virginia Beach, Virginia, this Friday, January 16, 2026. A driver was rescued from a sinking SUV after the vehicle entered the water, thanks to the courageous actions of several individuals who didn’t hesitate to intervene.

Dramatic Rescue on Shore Drive

The incident occurred at 13:17 at 3300 Shore Drive, according to local police, as reported by WAVY. The driver found herself trapped as her SUV rapidly filled with water.

Did You Know? Jeremy Way, one of the rescuers, is a 17-year veteran of the US Navy with experience as a rescuer.

The manager of nearby Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant first noticed the unfolding emergency after hearing a sound and observing a car entering the water. Jeremy Way, who was dining with a friend, immediately reacted upon hearing the impact. He stated, “I had already pulled my phone, wallet and knife out of my pocket, and once I got confirmation there was a person in the car I just dove in.”

A Desperate Plea for Help

Despite the frigid water temperatures, three additional individuals joined Way in the rescue effort. Upon reaching the vehicle, Way reported the driver expressed a desire to end her life, stating, “I don’t want to be here, let me die.” Though initially expressing this sentiment, she ultimately allowed the rescuers to assist her.

However, the vehicle’s electronic systems had failed, preventing the driver from unlocking the doors or lowering the windows. A rescuer was then forced to break the rear window to gain access and pull her to safety. By the time she was brought to shore, the SUV was fully submerged, as captured in a video shared on social media.

Expert Insight: The rapid response of these individuals highlights the critical role bystanders can play in emergency situations, particularly when seconds matter and vehicle safety systems fail.

Police confirmed that the driver and two of the rescuers were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, their injuries were not considered serious. Authorities retrieved the vehicle from the water shortly before 17:00. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
